While browsing through Meta's VR experiences in my Horizon feed, I recently came across a special short documentary: Oceans of Light — Dolphins VR from 2023. The ten-minute 180-degree video took me into the awe-inspiring underwater world of the Bahamas in my Meta Quest 3.
A special kind of VR dive
The movie begins on a reef, surrounded by colorful fish and several sharks, some of which swim right by me. But unlike some other movies or VR apps, these fascinating sea creatures don't seem the least bit threatening here.
Renowned freediver Ashleigh Baird doesn't seem to be in any danger either. She glides through the underwater world as if she is a part of it and takes me on a fascinating journey.
Among dolphins in the open ocean
Baird takes me out into the open ocean to meet a group of wild dolphins. Using an underwater propulsion system, the diver approaches the marine mammals and is eventually accepted by them.
From Baird's privileged perspective, I experience the "rhythmic underwater dance" of these exceptional creatures, see young animals playing with each other, and hear their impressive language. Make sure you have good headphones!
A special VR experience
Freediving, as practiced by Ashleigh Baird, requires years of training and involves enormous risks. Oceans of Light shows nature from a perspective that most people will probably never experience.
Watching these fascinating creatures in the VR headset made me realize once again how worthy our planet and its wildlife are of protection. So take ten minutes to enjoy this "dance of the dolphins" - it's worth it.
