Meta wants to foster 'lifestyle' apps on Quest 3
Meta is looking for new and interesting mixed reality concepts and is launching an accelerator for lifestyle apps.
Gaming, fitness, and social apps are the three most prominent use cases for Meta Quest. With the advent of mixed reality, Meta sees potential in another category: lifestyle apps. As an example, Meta cites the mixed reality app Pianovision, which can be used to learn to play the piano, as well as other concepts that came out of Meta's recent hackathon.
Meta has now launched an accelerator to support such apps.
"The Meta Quest Lifestyle App Accelerator is designed to spur the development of prototype consumer experiences that help people explore their interests and the communities around them, pursue their passions, build new skills, and enhance their favorite activities," Meta writes on the Quest Developer Blog. "Whether you are new to mixed reality development or are part of a seasoned development team, we want to see how your ideas can enrich people’s lives and help kickstart your company to do so."
Meta lists fashion, design, cooking, DIY, music, arts & crafts, and others as possible categories.
Those selected will receive funding to develop a prototype, mentoring and coaching from Meta, peer learning opportunities, exposure to VCs including a16z, Anorak Ventures, Bitkraft Ventures, Boost VC and Lightspeed, and Quest 3 devkits.
All participants will keep full ownership of their IP, code, assets, design, and distribution rights. The accelerator is open to international teams and is not limited to the US.
The program timeline is as follows
- June 18, 2024 - Submissions open
- October 15, 2024 - Submissions close
- December 31, 2024 - Teams selected
- December 2024 to May 2025 - Project development
