FACTS

Meta's VR fitness app Supernatural has been scientifically proven to be an effective workout equivalent to running, swimming, boxing, and cycling in a study conducted by the University of Victoria in Canada. The study found that Supernatural Flow was equivalent to running, while Supernatural Boxing was comparable to cycling, boxing or aerobic dancing at moderate intensity.

On average, Supernatural workouts qualify as vigorous activity, meaning they can help people meet recommended physical activity guidelines in half the time.

Supernatural is also introducing a new mixed reality mode that allows users to work out using pass-through while keeping an eye on their physical surroundings. In addition, the app is currently hosting the Disney Hits Challenge through June 9, offering Disney-themed workouts and the opportunity to earn bonus points.

CONTEXT

Supernatural: Meta's own VR app

Supernatural is Meta's own VR fitness app and is available for Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro — although it is only officially available in North America. The acquisition of Supernatural studio Within was an uphill battle for Meta.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission tried to block the deal, fearing that Meta would have a monopoly on the VR fitness market. However, a California court denied the FTC's request for an injunction.
