FACTS

Cyan Worlds, the studio behind the cult adventures Myst and Riven, has announced the current status of the PSVR 2 conversion of Firmament in a Kickstarter update. Originally released for PC, Mac, and PC VR, the puzzle adventure is scheduled for release on Playstation 4, Playstation 5, and Playstation VR 2 in the fall of 2024.

To make Firmament fit for the PlayStation platforms, the studio made nearly 1000 individual changes to its own version of the Unreal Engine and ported the game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. The studio is currently working on optimizing the game's performance on the consoles and meeting platform certification requirements.

CONTEXT

More puzzle adventures from Cyan Worlds to come

Cyan Worlds has many years of experience in virtual reality. With Obduction (2016), Myst (2020), and Firmament (2023), the studio has released several new editions and spiritual successors to its classic games with VR support in recent years.

The remake of the point-and-click adventure game Riven is scheduled for release in 2024 for PC, PC-VR, Mac, Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3. To ensure a high level of quality for Riven, Cyan is developing the VR and non-VR versions in parallel. The studio is using Unreal Engine 5 to recreate Riven with modern graphics, new puzzles and an expanded storyline.

Unlike the 1997 original, players will be able to move freely in a real-time 3D environment. According to Cyan, the Quest 3 version will be even more immersive than Quest 2 thanks to the higher performance of the hardware.
