Industrial group Liebherr commissions a production hall designed in Virtual Reality

Electric wheel loaders, solar energy and Virtual Reality — Liebherr shows what sustainable production can look like.

FACTS

The German-Swiss industrial group Liebherr has opened a new assembly hall for the production of battery-powered wheel loaders. Liebherr operates the plant in Bischofshofen, Austria. The hall, with a production area of nearly 1,000 square meters, was designed specifically for the production of these specialized vehicles and was planned with the help of Virtual Reality.

"This allowed us to test different layouts in order to optimally coordinate the main assembly line and the pre-assembly stations. This allowed us to make efficient use of the available space and achieve short transport routes," explains Jonas Schwob, project manager for the production of electric wheel loaders. Liebherr designed the new assembly hall according to the highest safety standards and separated the production from the assembly of conventional wheel loaders.

Peter Schachinger, Head of Production and Operations at the Liebherr plant in Bischofshofen, explained that a separate area was chosen in order to fully adapt the new assembly hall to the occupational safety measures required by the new high-voltage battery system. The energy supply for the assembly hall is provided by several solar cells installed on the factory premises with a total area of more than 3,400 square meters.

CONTEXT

The use of Virtual Reality in industry

The use of VR in industry is an ongoing trend that has become increasingly important in recent years. One example is Kloeckner Metals Germany, which trains crane operators in a VR environment.

This method not only offers greater safety for employees, but also greater efficiency in training. The German steel industry sees great opportunities in VR and believes that the technology has great potential for the future.
