Amnesia: The Dark Descent - Unofficial VR remake Sclerosis released
8.11.2023
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a cult classic of the horror genre. Eremin released the Mod Sclerosis: an Amnesia VR remake on November 6th 2023 after 3 years of development.
This Mod is an exact recreation of Amnesia: The Dark Descent in Unity. It also adds support for VR controllers so that doors, switches and valves can be used via motion controls.
Sclerosis can be played in Save Mode, which removes monsters for those who don't want to get scared. An additional PSX Mode changes the graphics into a Playstation 1 style.
Horrorfans can download Sclerosis: an Amnesia VR remake now via moddb.
Original News:
This horror game takes you back to the 19th century. You wake up in an old castle without knowing who you are or what brought you here. Through scattered notes, you gradually learn what has happened and that something evil is following you with every step.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent was released in 2010 for PC, Mac, and Linux and became an indie hit. Years later, versions for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch followed. The game was notable for its realistic object interactions and a game mechanic that made the protagonist's fear of the dark a central gameplay element. Both of these features would translate well to virtual reality.
Amnesia was the start of a horror game series that was followed by three other titles, A Machine for Pigs (2013), Rebirth (2020), and The Bunker (2023).
Unofficial VR port is coming to PC VR
In 2021, indie developer Gordey Eremin created an Android remake of The Dark Descent called Sclerosis. This was done without the blessing of Frictional Games, the studio behind the successful series. It banned the release of the port on mobile platforms, so the game is currently only available on Itch.io.
A few days ago, Eremin announced that he is working on a VR version of Sclerosis. A first trailer shows the already implemented motion controls and simple object interactions. The visual effects, which are triggered by the protagonist's fear and madness, will be reworked specifically for virtual reality.
Sclerosis VR is currently set to release in the fall and will be a PC VR game.
I asked Eremin if a mobile VR version for headsets like Meta Quest is planned. This would make sense since Sclerosis is already based on Android. I will update this article if I hear back.
Update: Eremin replied to me that the VR version will "probably" be PC-only, since Quest doesn't have enough power.
