This VR game gives me strong Dark Souls vibes
Grimlord is a dark fantasy VR game for PC VR, PSVR 2 and mobile VR headsets. What can we expect?
VR gaming is currently in a slumber. There are few big releases and a lack of long games that keep you glued to your VR headset for more than two to three hours. Indie studio Metalcat, which specializes in fantasy VR games, is looking to change that with Grimlord, a challenging action-RPG in the style of Dark Souls.
Dark fantasy in VR with dungeons and boss battles
Though many VR studios aren't covering themselves in glory right now, 2023 may have something to offer VR RPG fans. At Meta's Gaming Showcase this year, the massive RPG Asgard's Wrath 2 was announced, and another interesting genre spin-off, Grimlord, could soon follow.
From the images shown so far, Grimlord, developed with Unreal Engine 4, looks excellent overall. The medieval dark fantasy setting is characterized by rocky landscapes and gloomy castles where you compete with soldiers, skeleton warriors, archers, and sword masters.
You'll fight your way through dungeons in soulslike style, which should offer alternative routes, climbing passages and, of course, challenging boss fights. You'll have a classic RPG arsenal of weapons at your disposal, from swords to bows, which can be upgraded with legendary items.
Skill trees and story campaign for RPG fans
The “Smithing System” is supposed to allow numerous modifications to adapt the weapons to your own play style. Magic is also supposed to play a role in the bloody battles. So far, only fire magic can be seen in the trailers, but it is visually impressive.
Role-players can also look forward to a character system that will offer various build possibilities. There will also be a story campaign that will be driven by NPCs and environmental storytelling.
The action RPG will be released for PC VR via Steam, Playstation VR 2, Pico 4 and Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro and Meta Quest 3 and will cost just under $30. Whether Grimlord delivers what it promises, you can soon try out for yourself. The Early Access phase will start on SteamVR on June 22. At the end of 2023, Grimlord should also be playable on mobile VR headsets and PSVR 2.
