UPDATE

Cyan confirms that Riven will be released for Quest 2 and Quest 3. You can find more information at the end of the article.

The legendary point-and-click adventure game Riven is getting a UE5 remake and will be optionally playable with a VR headset.

Myst (1993) and Riven (1997) are among the most influential games of the 90s.

The studio Cyan Worlds, which still exists today, has announced a remake of Riven, which will be released in 2024 for flat screen and VR platforms. The studio has not revealed which VR platforms exactly. What seems certain is that the PC version will support VR. This is according to the remake's Steam product page, which went live today.

The studio describes the new Riven as follows:

Leveraging modern-day technology and the power of Unreal Engine 5, Cyan Worlds aims to recreate and expand on its vision for Riven with development focused on delivering native experiences on both flatscreen and VR platforms. The game will offer an unparalleled level of immersion, allowing players to truly feel part of the enigmatic D’ni Empire while exploring the decaying age of Riven.

With new puzzles, expanded storylines, and breathtaking visuals, even those who know the original by heart will find themselves lost again in its depths. Cyan Worlds is dedicated to ensuring that every player’s experience is unique and memorable, whether longtime fans or newcomers to the series.

Unlike the original, the remake will allow players to move freely through a real-time 3D environment. There is no gameplay footage to be seen yet, the following trailer only shows the game's logo.

Cyan Worlds writes that the flatscreen and VR versions are being developed in parallel to ensure a high-quality experience regardless of the platform chosen.

The studio could pull this off because of its years of VR experience: its last three games, Obduction (2016), Myst (2020), and Firmament (2023), all offered VR support. Since a major update in the summer of 2022, the Quest version of Myst can be played with hand tracking.

UPDATE from May 14th, 2024

Cyan Worlds announces that Riven will initially be released for Meta Quest 2 and 3 as well as Windows (flatscreen and VR) and Mac. According to the Horizon Store listing, the game will be released in the summer of 2024.

According to Cyan, Riven will look even more immersive on Quest 3 than it does on Quest 2, meaning the game will get optimizations for the more powerful headset.
