Realms of Flow is one of my favorite VR apps because it's so different from most of the other apps I use, and because it provides a complete sensory immersion in beautiful sights and sounds.

The last time I wrote about Realms of Flow was last summer, when I reviewed a new AI-generated experience.

Since then, four new VR experiences have been added, two of them in the last week. This brings Realms of Flow to 20 VR experiences, four of which were created using generative AI tools.

Here is an overview of the new VR experiences and some impressions.

  • Magical Vastness (released in December 2024, see YouTube teaser): This VR experience is inspired by the vast landscapes and mesmerizing northern lights of Iceland. Developer Marc Zimmermann writes: "For me personally, Iceland is a special inspiration because it is there that I feel this vastness and magic the most, and where I discovered my longing for moments of solitude in nature that give me strength. Feelings of melancholy and transience as well as joy and wonder are mixed for me in the special ambivalent and atmospheric landscapes of Iceland."
  • Mellow Embrace (released February 2024, see YouTube teaser below): This VR experience, created using generative AI tools, was my favorite of the new ones. Here we are immersed in abstract swirls of color. The shapes are reminiscent of smoke, ink in water, or gas explosions spreading through space. Combined with the rolling movement of the camera, the effect is hypnotic.
  • To The Core and Oceanic Sway (released April 2024, see YouTube teasers 1 and 2): These two VR experiences launched last week. In To The Core, we float toward a metallic surface that opens up like the layers of an onion and curves sideways past us. Zimmermann describes the experience this way: "A journey into the vast, embracing stillness of the inner core, peeling away the ego layer by layer. This experience may seem a little darker to some, but that is part of the catharsis, before hopefully a state of inner peace finally sets in. Finally, like Mellow Embrace, Oceanic Sway was created using AI tools and transports us to a coral reef: "Instead of visibly changing, successive scenes (as in Mellow Embrace), Oceanic Sway creates a continuous, more seamless movement through the underwater scenery with smooth, almost invisible transitions while the scenery is still constantly changing," Zimmermann writes.

You can purchase Realms of Flow from the Horizon Store. Quest 3, 3s, 2 and Pro are supported.
