Action Hero is coming to Meta Quest this year, bringing back a popular mechanic from a VR classic.

FACTS

Swedish VR studio Fast Travel Games has announced the VR shooter Action Hero as part of the first VR Games Showcase. The game will be released in 2024 for Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro.

In Action Hero, you take on the role of the main character in five different movies from different genres. Each movie is divided into four acts, each with five scenes. In most scenes, hordes of enemy henchmen will attack your character, requiring quick reflexes and accurate aim. Special events such as additional obstacles, boss enemies and elaborate backgrounds are designed to provide variety.

The game runs in slow motion, only speeding up when you move — a nod to the cult VR hit Superhot VR. This gives you time to react and plan your next move. One moment you're dodging boulders, the next you're fending off a dinosaur attack.

At launch, Action Hero will feature the following content:

  • 5 main movies: Immerse yourself in a modern action epic. Break into the enemy base for an explosive heist, explore ancient ruins and more.
  • Comfortable, cinematic design: Static combat allows you to focus on your movements instead of button presses. Meanwhile, slow-motion combat lets you fight back in style.
  • Designed for Meta Quest: Wireless gameplay is tailored for standalone VR, allowing you to dodge bullets, dive under boulders, and weave through laser grids without getting tangled.
CONTEXT

Fast Travel Games on the road to success

Fast Travel Games says it has sold more than a million VR games — and counting. The Stockholm-based studio employs VR pioneers and has made a name for itself with titles such as Vampire: The Masquerade — Justice, Apex Construct and Wraith: The Oblivion — Afterlife.

In 2023, Fast Travel Games generated the equivalent of 7.1 million euros in revenue, 46 percent more than in the previous year. CEO Oskar Burman expects significant growth in the industry over the next three years due to falling hardware prices, growing competition and more VR users. To prepare for this, the company secured four million euros in investor funding in October 2023.
